MI DNR to begin drawdown of Trout Brook Pond in Chippewa County

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will be drawing down Trout Brook Pond in Chippewa County this September.

The drawdown will begin soon, and will be done under a drawdown permit issued by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. The land around the pond is entirely within U.S. Forest Service – Hiawatha National Forest ownership, but the structure is the responsibility of the DNR Fisheries Division.

The impoundment is approximately 16 acres in size. The drawdown will be done at a rate no faster than 12 inches of water per week. The drawdown is being done to prepare for removal of the Trout Brook Pond Dam, which is planned for 2018. The dam is being removed due to the high costs of inspection and maintenance, and minimal use of the pond by the public for recreational fishing.

Recreational users of the pond will notice significant changes to the water body during the drawdown period, as there will be less water in the pond than users normally would experience.
