O'Bannon Woods SP to show 1800s farm life Labor Day weekend

Experience rural life as it was in the 19th century during a Living Pioneer Farmstead event at O'Bannon Woods State Park over Labor Day weekend.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 2 and 3, at the park's Hickory Hollow Interpretive Center. The farmstead will feature a working blacksmith shop, cooper shop, summer kitchen, trappers shed, tomahawk throwing with a "pioneer dunking boot" and more.

Demonstrations of frontier life will include leatherworking, weaving, spinning and gold panning.

The event will also feature demonstrations of the unique 1850 haypress, which is powered by an ox. Demonstrations will be take place at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

On Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., artist Tamara Brown will demonstrate and teach plein-air painting. Visitors can watch Brown paint and create their own artwork.

Labor Day weekend is also the last weekend of the season that Wyandotte Caves and the aquatic center will be open.

Living farmstead activities and the haypress demonstrations are free after paying the standard entrance fee of $7 per in-state vehicle and $9 per out-of-state vehicle. Admission to the aquatic center is $5 per person, in addition to the park gate fee.

Regular tour fees to both Big Wyandotte Cave and Little Wyandotte Cave apply. Call the park office for cave information.
