COLUMBUS, Ohio – With their combined team time of 382.22 seconds, the Central Florida Rifle & Pistol Club took the Junior Varsity Division national title in the 1911 pistol event at the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Team Championships in Ohio.
The Florida team was led by Jackson Vasey of Altamonte Springs with 59.51, followed by Alexander Jara of Orlando with 77.09, Gerik Siwko of Saint Cloud with 101.45 and Sarah Myers of Windermere with 144.17.
The Lake Country Action Shooters of Wisconsin finished second with 426.46. Jonathan Steffel of Delafield was the squad's top shooter with 84.79, followed by Jack Gerstmeier of Brookfield with 99.58, Tarek Powell of Jefferson with 117.51 and Dylan Lenz of Pewaukee with 124.58.
Rounding out the top three were the Lake County Young Guns of Ohio. Jared Gray of Perry with 75.12, Andy Kochevar of Painesville with 83.96, Josh Henry of Mentor with 138.91 and Zak Walker of Painesville with 202.58 combined for a total team time of 500.57.
Held July 8-15 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio, 430-plus athletes representing 19 states put over 55,000 rounds down range during eight days of competition in the sport of Speed Shooting. The format of the match has shooters facing four stages, each with five steel plates. Racing against an electronic timer, each stage is designed to test a shooter's speed and accuracy.
The Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) is a youth development program in which adult coaches and other volunteers use the shooting sport of Speed Shooting to teach and to demonstrate sportsmanship, responsibility, honesty, ethics, integrity, teamwork, and other positive life skills.
Nationally, there are over 1,300 students and more than 400 coaches from 31 states participating in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program. The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, Inc. (SSSF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the National Governing Body for the Scholastic Action Shooting Program.
