Michigan: Accessible Canoe/Kayak Launch at Lake Cadillac

Universally accessible kayak and canoe launch officially will open to the public

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host a ribbon-cutting event Tuesday, Aug. 1, to mark the official opening of the new universally accessible kayak and canoe launch at Mitchell State Park in Wexford County. The ribbon-cutting, which starts at 11 a.m., will take place at the new launch, located adjacent to the public beach on Lake Cadillac.

The day also is an opportunity to celebrate the community partnerships that were integral to the success of the project. The public and media both are invited to see this new outdoor recreation feature.

The Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce 2017 leadership class selected the kayak and canoe launch as its community service project. As part of the nine-month leadership training program, participants choose a project to support, one that will benefit the local area. This year's project, "Launch Cadillac," was selected and awarded to Mitchell State Park.

Through generous community support, class members raised more than $45,000 toward the project. The DNR supplied material to construct a new parking area, an accessible pathway, decking area and abutment for the launch.

"The Cadillac Leadership group, Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce, Mitchell State Park and the Friends of Mitchell State Park would like to sincerely thank all the community members who supported 'Launch Cadillac,'" said Scott Slavin, Mitchell State Park supervisor. "We encourage everyone to utilize this wonderful water access opportunity and enjoy beautiful Lake Cadillac."

Mitchell State Park is located at 6093 M-115 in Cadillac. Anyone planning to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony is asked to use the the park entrance on the east side of M-115.
