Walker Tavern Historic Site hosts vintage base ball game Aug. 5

Back in the mid-19th century, when Walker Tavern was a favorite stop for travelers along the Old Chicago Road, a new sport called "base ball" was sweeping the nation. On Saturday, Aug. 5, Walker Tavern Historic Site near Brooklyn, Michigan, will host a vintage base ball game between the home team, Walker Wheels, and rival Saginaw Old Golds. Weather permitting, the game begins at 1 p.m. Admission is free.

Base ball evolved into today's modern baseball, but the old-style game has a dedicated following.

"Fans love the game's 1860s rules and uniforms," said Walker Tavern Historic Site historian Laurie Perkins. "There are no gloves and no swearing – there must be gentlemanly conduct at all times. It's truly an enjoyable, family-friendly afternoon."

Visitors can bring in their own food and chairs to settle in for the game. The Walker Wheels 2017 home schedule is available online.
