Ellison Takes Silver at 2017 World Games in Field Archery

WROCLAW, Poland - After leading qualification with one of the highest field archery scores in history, Brady Ellison (Globe, Arizona) was well poised to take his first World Games gold this weekend.

Under the new format of the event, the 12 archers in each division are divided into two pools. The top two archers are guaranteed a spot in the semifinals and just shoot a show match to determine which pool they will sit atop for the final-four matches. Then, the bottom two archers in each pool shoot a match with the winning archer advancing to the next highest seeded archer in the bracket and so on.

In yesterday's matches, Ellison faced Amedeo Tonelli of Italy for the show match; the two were neck and neck with high scores but Tonelli took the win by a single point 95-94. USA's Vic Wunderle (San Antonio, Texas) and Heather Koehl (Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin), who were ranked 5th and 8th respectively each fell in their first matches.

In the semifinals today, Ellison easily cleaned his match with Japan's Wataru Oonuki, taking a 10-point win 65-55 to advance to the gold final. There, he earned a rematch with Italy's Tonelli. Tonelli opened the match up two, but Ellison narrowed the gap to one, but with several 4s in the next two ends, Tonelli clinched the victory for a second time 61-58 to win the gold. Ellison climbed the podium for silver.
