FAIRFAX, Va. – The NRA Foundation has awarded $15,000 in college scholarships to attendees of last summer's 2016 Youth Education Summit (Y.E.S.) through the Y.E.S. Grand Scholarship program.
At the conclusion of Y.E.S., a seven-day educational fellowship in Washington, D.C. for high school students, participants are encouraged to integrate what they learned during Y.E.S. into their communities for the chance to compete for a Y.E.S. Grand Scholarship for financial aid paid directly to the accredited college or technical school of their choice. Over a period of 11 months, students competing for the scholarship must introduce NRA programs into their communities and create a portfolio documenting the experience.
Recipients of the 2016 Y.E.S. Grand Scholarship performed a number of activities to promote firearm safety and raise money for shooting sports programs, including hosting Eddie Eagle GunSafe® Program events, starting an NRA affiliated shooting club, giving speeches about Y.E.S. to multiple community groups, writing articles for school newsletters, blogs, and newspapers, and working on launching NRA's Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC) in their area.
"The Youth Education Summit has awarded more than $518,000 in college scholarships over its 21-year history," said Sarah Engeset, NRA's Director of Volunteer Fundraising. "We are proud to assist the next generation of competitive shooters, hunters, and firearms enthusiasts pursue their dreams through higher education."
2016 Y.E.S. Grand Scholarship Winners:
$6,500 – Serena Juchnowski - Richfield, Ohio
$5,500 – Emily Saltarelli - Montgomery, Texas
$2,000 – Bryttani MacNamara - Sulphur, Louisiana
$1,000 – Aidan Thomason – Knoxville, Tennessee
