Maquoketa Cardinals of Iowa Win Open Div. Handicap Trap National Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Following on their win in the Doubles Trap event, the Maquoketa Cardinals of Iowa claimed their second national title breaking 861 of their 1,000 targets in the Handicap Trap Open Division during competition at the 2017 Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) National Team Championships.

Clinton Manning of Maquoketa led the team with 192 broken targets followed by fellow Maquoketa shooter Thayne Chapin with 178. Isaiah Miller of Baldwin added 171 while Isaac Crist of Delmar and Kaitlyn Lane of Maquoketa each finished with 160.

Held July 8-15 at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio, more than 2,300 athletes representing 29 states faced over one million clay targets during eight days of competition in the shooting disciplines of Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays.

Second place in the division went to Iowa's North Scott Trap Team. Combining for a total of 818 targets were Carter Helkenn of Eldridge (167), Clayton Adrian of Walcott (167), Dalton Schoenthaler of Dixon (166), Kresten Keester of Long Grove (164) and Lucas Moore of Donahue (154).

Finishing just four target back in third was the Tennessee squad from Southern Shooting Sports with 814 targets. John Michael Baggett of Clarksville led with 182 followed by Isac VanWormer of Cunningham (167), Fred Peters of Clarksville (160), Hunter Purviance of Southside (159) and Seth Proctor of Clarksville (146).

The Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) is a youth development program in which adult coaches and other volunteers use the shooting sports of Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays, as well as the Olympic disciplines of Bunker Trap, Trap Doubles and International Skeet to teach and to demonstrate sportsmanship, responsibility, honesty, ethics, integrity, teamwork, and other positive life skills. Nationally, there are nearly 14,800 students and more than 3,300 adult volunteers across 45 states participating in the Scholastic Clay Target Program.

The Scholastic Shooting Sports Foundation, Inc. (SSSF), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is the National Governing Body for the Scholastic Clay Target Program. SCTP was started by the National Shooting Sports Foundation in 2001.
