Celebrating Calvert's Young Artist in March

The Calvert Marine Museum is pleased to host the annual Youth Art Month Exhibit entitled "Portraits of the Chesapeake" through March 28 in the museum lobby. See the inspiration behind these young artists living on or around the Chesapeake Bay with over 140 original works of art from students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. The annual opening reception is on Friday, March 3 from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. and will be held during the museum's First Free Friday event. Visitors will enjoy free museum admission, an opportunity to meet student artists, refreshments, and musical entertainment by Bone & String.

Youth Art Month has been celebrated in Maryland for over 50 years. Over the past 19 of those years, the Calvert Marine Museum has collaborated with Calvert County Public School Art teachers to host this event. Heather Smith, Calvert County Public School Youth Art Liaison, has worked closely with museum staff, Tim Scheirer and Melody Gallipeau, to coordinate the 2017 exhibit. "I am lucky to work in a school system and county that supports the arts. Art gives students a visual literacy, self-esteem, respect, and better creative problem-solving skills. Students accomplish this through activities involving the history, production, aesthetics, and constructive criticism of a variety of different works of art," says Heather Smith.

The Youth Art Month Exhibit is a great way to celebrate and share the talents of the young people with the community. See it in the museum lobby through March 28 at the Calvert Marine Museum.
