Northeast Ohio Deer Hunters Reminded of Antlerless Permit Use

Antlerless permit only valid in 10 counties statewide

AKRON, OH – As more deer hunters take to the field, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) would like to share a reminder to purchase the correct hunting license and deer permits prior to deer hunting this season.

When deer hunting in Ohio, a deer permit is required in addition to a valid Ohio hunting license. Antlerless deer permits expire November 27 and will not be valid for deer-gun week except in ODNR Division of Wildlife authorized controlled hunts.

Antlerless permits are only valid in 10 counties. Those counties are Cuyahoga, Delaware, Franklin, Hamilton, Lake, Lorain, Lucas, Portage, Stark and Summit. "Here in northeast Ohio, there are only six counties where a hunter can use the antlerless permit," said Scott Peters, District Three Wildlife Management Supervisor. ""If there is any confusion at all, please reach out to us so we can clarify the regulations. We're here to help," added Peters. Wildlife District Three can be reached by calling (330) 644-2293. Hunters can also reach out to the general hotline at (800)-WILDLIFE (945-3543).

Antlerless permits serve as tools used to encourage early harvest of antlerless deer. As populations approach program goals, antlerless permit use is restricted to reduce pressure on antlerless deer. Hunters can still take antlerless deer; however, they will need to use an either-sex permit.

The statewide deer bag limit is six deer. Hunters may take only one antlered deer regardless of county, hunting method, or season.

Although Ohio resident landowners, spouses, and their children are not required to have a hunting license, either-sex deer permit, or antlerless deer permit when hunting on land they own, they are required to follow regulated bag limits and check in their harvest. Landowners must create a permit and attach it to the harvested deer. Once tagged, a deer can be checked at a license vendor, via an operator-assisted game check by calling 866-703-1928 (fees apply), or online at www.wildohio.gov.

Deer hunting regulations can be obtained at a license vendor or online at http://wildlife.ohiodnr.gov/huntingandtrappingregulations#
