Fall Issue of BHA's Backcountry Journal

The newest issue of Backcountry Hunters & Anglers' magazine is available today

MISSOULA, Mont. – The fall issue of Backcountry Journal is arriving in BHA members' mailboxes now. Here's a preview of the new issue:

Testing the Limits in Alaska's Chugach Range: In the centerfold feature, Phil Watts takes readers on a grueling Dall sheep hunt in southern Alaska. He pushed his physical limits and then some, overcoming a fear of heights and finding hidden capabilities in search of the mystical white rams of the North.

Public Lands Hunting the World Over: As editor in chief of Petersen's Hunting, Mike Schoby has hunted every continent with huntable game. But even in the most remote corners of the planet, he longs for the freedom provided by the American system of public lands. In his analysis of public land hunting opportunities worldwide, he proves how good we have it.

Finding Fish – and Solitude – on Cape Cod: Award-winning author Tom Keer wanders Massachusetts' Cape Cod National Seashore at dusk, thinking about conservation, solitude and when the tide will turn. When it inevitably does, the striped bass come out to play.

Eating Right on Your Next Backcountry Hunt: Jarrett Babincsak almost cut short his first solo backpack elk hunt due to indigestion from a sudden dietary change. Now a licensed personal trainer, he offers tips for eating right and maintaining the energy required to keep hiking hard.

Jump Shooting – A Kayak Duck Hunt: A page from illustrator Ed Anderson's sketchbook, this unique story-telling method brings the reader along with a Boykin spaniel to load a kayak with southern Idaho mallards.

Hunter, Defined: Nicole Qualtieri of Zero Point Zero Productions always knew she was a hunter, though she didn't actually start until she was in her early 30s. That knowledge is in all of us as humans, she says. We just have to let it out.

Also in this issue: The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, reflections on a road closure, cooking walleye puttanesca in Minnesota's Boundary Waters and a unique perspective on a boy's first kill.

Backcountry Journal is distributed to members, regional BLM and Forest Service offices, and the home and D.C. offices of legislators from states where BHA has chapters. It is now available in a digital flipbook edition, available to members on the BHA website. Join BHA today to get your copy.
