Annual hummingbird banding at Indiana Dunes SP

Visitors to Indiana Dunes State Park can witness the banding of hummingbirds for scientific research on Aug. 13.

Licensed hummingbird bander Allen Chartier will demonstrate banding, discuss his research and offer tips for hummer feeding and gardening for hummers.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. CDT with Chartier setting hummingbird traps at the nature center feeders and then banding birds.

At 1 p.m. at the nature center, Chartier will present his research on ruby-throated hummingbirds and tips for attracting them. The program will include an optional tour to see a hummingbird nest that recently fledged young.

"For visitors that have never seen a hummingbird in the hand and up close, it's a magical experience," said park interpreter Brad Bumgardner.

Participation is free after paying the standard gate fee of $7 per Indiana vehicle and $12 per out-of-state vehicle. For more information, call the nature center at (219) 926-1390.
