Northwestern Outdoors Explores Oregon's Outback

This week we head to the South Central part of the Beaver State to explore an area known as "Oregon's Outback". This sparsely populated region is home to a combination of high desert, forests, wetlands, streams and lakes that provide lots of opportunities for the outdoors enthusiast. We'll start off talking to Clark Heglar at the US Forest Service Ranger Station in Paisley. He'll tell you about fishing and camping for trout in the Chewaucan River as well as several area lakes. He's got a great suggestion for bird watchers just out of town and if you are looking for something really unique you can rent a Forest Service Fire Lookout for a few nights! From Paisley we head to the Summer Lake Wildlife Area. Manager Martin St. Louis shares the highlights of what you'll find here to include a premiere bird watching experience, great waterfowl hunting in the fall, and a couple of very interesting fishing options you can take advantage of all year long.

If you are looking for a place to stay you'll be hard pressed to do better than staying at The Lodge at Summer Lake, located directly across the road from the wildlife area. They have cabins bordering a private bass fishing pond, very clean and comfortable accomodations, and the Flyway Restaurant which dishes up some very good meals at ultra affordable prices! Co-owner Gary Brain will tell you about all of this and more! www.northwesternoutdoors.com
