Reflecting on an Ammunition Innovator In Game & Fish/Sportsman Magazines

A look back at how John Nosler helped change hunting forever.

Kennesaw GA (Jan. 30, 2015) -- Few men cast a larger shadow on the hunting world than John Nosler did. The long-time innovator helped shape the development of big-game bullets, as well as the way hunters utilized their firearms and ammunition. His story is being celebrated this month in the February issue of Game & Fish/Sportsman magazines.

As the inventor of the Nosler Partition bullet in 1948, "Big John" helped create the modern premium bullet industry. The revolution began on a moose hunt two years earlier, when he realized that the two types of bullets currently available lacked the combination of penetration and expansion needed to bring down big game. He set out to design a better bullet himself, and created a new industry in the process.

He spent decades engineering bullets and loads, refining shooting techniques and elevating the sport of hunting. He continued to hunt successfully into his nineties, and shot remarkably tight groups on the range when he was 94. He passed away in 2010, leaving behind a legacy that endures today.

"Perhaps no one is better suited to write about John Nosler than author Gary Lewis," said John Geiger, senior editor of Game & Fish/Sportsman magazines. "Gary was close with Big John, who generously shared many stories and photos."

Lewis utilized hours of interviews and observation of Nosler's innovation and vision to build a biography of the industry giant.
