59% of New Hampshire Moose Hunters Successful So Far

CONCORD, N.H. -- As of Wednesday, October 22, 2014, a total of 75 moose had been taken in the 2014 New Hampshire moose hunt (51 bulls and 24 cows). That means that 59% of the 127 hunters holding moose permits had succeeded by the midway point in the state's moose hunt. Last year (2013), 43% of hunters had gotten their moose by this point in the season.

"The hunt is proceeding at a steady pace," reports N. H. Fish and Game Department Moose Project Leader Kristine Rines. "We are seeing some moose with heavy tick loads, and others with virtually no ticks."

With the initial rutting period over, hunters are not seeing much sparring activity among bulls. Cows that have not been bred continue to cycle into estrus, however, so young bulls should still be responding well to calls.

New Hampshire's nine-day moose hunt continues through Sunday, October 26, 2014. This year, more than 10,000 people entered the moose hunt lottery for a chance to win a permit for the New Hampshire moose hunt.
