Camp Fear at Lake Lurleen State Park on October 31

Visit Lake Lurleen State Park on October 31 for a night of Halloween fun when the park hosts its 3rd annual Camp Fear. The event will take place from 6-9 p.m. and will feature hayrides ($1 per person), trick-or-treating and Halloween decorations in a family friendly environment. Admission to Camp Fear is $3 for ages 12 and up, $1 for kids under 12. Lake Lurleen State Park is located at 13226 Lake Lurleen Rd., Coker, Ala., 35452.

"Over 300 people attended last year's event in spite of the drizzling rain and chilly temperatures," said Rosemary Burnette, Lake Lurleen's manager. "Everyone thanked us for providing this venue for their children to have fun in a safe environment. It is always the goal of the park staff to provide an enjoyable experience any time the community visits the park."

Well-behaved dogs in costume are welcome to attend the event but must be kept on a short leash at all times. In addition to the Halloween festivities, campers who decorate their campsites for the event will receive a discounted per-night rate. Campsites are limited and going fast. For camping reservations, call 205-339-1558.

The 1,625-acre state park is located 9 miles northwest of Tuscaloosa and features 91 campsites, recently renovated bathhouses, new playground equipment and a recently opened Nature Center. Lake Lurleen is also home to more than 23 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails that are maintained with help from the West Alabama Mountain Biking Association. Other outdoor activities include fishing, picnicking, swimming, boat rentals, and bird and wildlife watching.

The Alabama State Parks Division operates and maintains 22 state parks encompassing approximately 48,000 acres of land and water.
