Learn Something New at 2014 Oklahoma Wildlife Expo!

Have you ever wanted to start a campfire without a lighter or matches? Are you looking for the easiest way to fillet a mess of fish? Whether you're an old hand in the outdoors or a greenhorn who's ready for some new adventures, you can learn some new tricks at the 2014 Oklahoma Wildlife Expo!

The schedule of live seminars during the two-day event promises something to interest everyone. And what's even better: Everything is free!
2014 Oklahoma Wildlife Expo "Our schedule of seminars this year is among the best we've ever had at the Wildlife Expo," said Rhonda Hurst, coordinator of the event for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. "Visitors are sure to find a topic that interests them. And sitting in on a seminar is a great way to enjoy a break during your day at the Expo!"

The Wildlife Expo, the state's largest outdoor recreation event, will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Lazy E Arena, just north of Oklahoma City. Admission and parking are free.

Free seminars will be presented at various locations at the Expo. Two seminar areas will be inside the Lazy E Arena near the northeast end. There will also be seminars presented on the Waterfront Stage at one end of the indoor kayak pond, and in the Watchable Wildlife Seminar Tent outdoors.

Beginning on the hour, seminars in the arena are designed to educate about nature and help hone your outdoor skills. Seminars will be conducted simultaneously in two separate areas. Topics are:
  • Catch Spring Crappie
  • Starting Fire Without Matches
  • Juglining and Trotlining 101
  • Oklahoma State University Insect Adventure
  • Caliber Selection
  • Underwater Oklahoma
  • Oklahoma Venomous Snake Identification
  • Crappie Fishing Techniques


Guests will be able to see and hear about nature during the fun and interesting seminars scheduled in the Watchable Wildlife Seminar Tent. Seminars there will begin on the half-hour, and topics will include Backyard Bats, Texas Horned Lizards, Bird Feeding 101, It's All About Bluebirds!, Recycling -- It's For the Birds!, Why Nature Parks Matter and Gardening for Wildlife.

Anyone who might like to go on a horseback adventure in the outdoors shouldn't miss the seminars at the Mule Packing booth inside the arena. Starting on the hour, these seminars will explore topics such as common horsemanship knots, fitting bits and saddles, packing antlers and game, camping and riding on Wildlife Department areas, and packing and using a riding saddle.

An outdoor dog training area will present seminars focusing on various breeds throughout both days. Programs will be offered on bird dogs, retrievers, squirrel dogs, coonhounds, beagles and pointing dogs at various times. To see a dog training schedule, go online to www.wildlifedepartmentexpo.com.
