Dallas resident Michael Hartman has never been deer hunting.

That is going to change this season after Hartman's name was drawn after the Texas Trophy Hunters Extravaganza show in Fort Worth. He won the South Texas deer hunt this season after purchasing chances to help support the Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation.

"I've never been before and I'm probably going to take advantage of it," he said.

When LSON called Hartman to tell him he was picked from more than 500 entries, he didn't believe it.

"I've never won anything in my life," he said. "I'm excited."

Hartman has hunted dove and quail in the past and is looking forward to his first South Texas deer hunt.

Hartman said he would probably take the trip sometime after Jan. 1 - a good time to hunt the Golden Triangle in Dimmitt County when mature bucks are still searching for late-rut does.

Also winning was Midlothian hunter Tim Smith, who was drawn for a dove hunt, and Bryan Mansell from Crossroads, who won a scope.

The Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation is about providing opportunities for hunter and anglers.

The mission statement reads, "The Lone Star Outdoor News Foundation will create hunting and fishing opportunities, benefit youth education and support wildlife research and outdoor journalism."
