AZ Bat Workshop Gives Participants Hands-On Opportunity to Capture and ID Bat Species

PHOENIX -- Bats have an undeserved bad reputation. But, do you know all of the good things they do, like eating pesky mosquitoes and flies? The Arizona Game and Fish Department invites you to participate in a bat monitoring survey on Saturday, Aug. 2 from 6 to 10 p.m. at Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center in Scottsdale.

Participants will help capture and identify local bat species alongside biologists. Data collected during the survey will be used by the department as part of its overall bat conservation and monitoring effort.

The fee to participate is $40 per person and includes a guided tour of Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center's sanctuary, presentation by department biologists and a real bat-netting experience. Author and biologist David Brown will also be on hand to sign books including "Vampiro," a comprehensive look at the biology and myths of vampire bats. Light refreshments will be provided.

Arizona is home to 28 species of bats, many of which live and forage right in our own backyards. Here's your chance to see these fascinating creatures up close and learn mo.

To register, visit www.southwestwildlife.org. Space is limited.

Southwest Wildlife Conservation Center is located at 27026 N. 156th St. in Scottsdale.
