August Events at the Calvert Marine Museum

Friday, August 1 - First Free Friday returns!
The Museum and Drum Point Lighthouse are open and free to the public from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. Docents are available in every gallery. Enjoy free 30-minute cruises aboard the William B. Tennison.

Saturday, August 2 - Lighthouse Adventure Cruise: Northern Bay
Participants will see six lighthouses with an expert guide aboard a private charter. Cruises leave from the Drum Point Lighthouse at 7:45 a.m. and return at approximately 4:00 p.m. The cost is $130; $120 for members. Space is limited and preregistration is required. Call 410-326-2042, ext. 41.

Sea Squirts: Doing the Crab Dance
10:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Free drop-in program for toddlers 18 months to three years and their caregivers.

Friday, August 15 - Maritime Performance Series presents SIMPLE GIFTS
7:30 p.m. in the Harms Gallery. Two women plus twelve instruments equals one good time. This award-winning duo plays everything from lively Irish jigs and down-home American reels to hard-driving Klezmer frailachs and haunting Gypsy melodies. Spicing the mix with the distinctive rhythms of Balkan dance music, the lush sounds of Scandinavian twin fiddling, and original compositions written in a traditional style give this duo a unique and exciting sound. Admission is $10 at the door, cash or check; beer and wine available for sale.

Saturday, August 16 - Fossil Field Experience
9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Explore the fossils of Calvert Cliffs on a local beach with a trained guide and get a guided tour of our fossil hall. Fee is $20 per person and includes museum admission. Space is limited and preregistration is required. Children must be 8-years-old and accompanied by an adult. Call 410-326-2042, ext. 41.

Saturday, August 23 - Dee of St. Mary's Public Sail
2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Experience the Patuxent River aboard a historic Chesapeake workboat. Enjoy a two-hour public sail aboard the Dee of St. Mary's skipjack leaving from the Lore Oyster House. Fee is $25, 12 and up, $15 for children 8 - 12 years. No children under 8 please. Call 410-326-2042, ext. 41 to register. Preregistration required; space is limited.

Saturday, August 23 - Toy Boat Building
2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Build a toy wooden boat and take it home on the 4th Saturday of every month. $2 donation with museum admission.

Sunday, August 24 - Journey performs live!
7:30 p.m. Waterside Music Series presents Journey on the PNC Waterside Pavilion. Tickets are $124/$84/$74/$64, additional fees apply. Purchase tickets at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com, call 1-800-787-9454 or stop by Prince Frederick Ford/Jeep/Dodge. The museum closes at 3:00 p.m.

Thursday, August 28 - Echoes of Nature
Sea Squirts: 10:00 - 10:30 am. Special Guest from Echoes of Nature will present Warm and Fuzzy, sponsored by PNC Bank. Free drop-in program for toddlers 18 months to 3 years.

Little Minnows: 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon.
Special Guest from Echoes of Nature will present Hunting for a Square Meal, sponsored by PNC Bank. Children ages 3 - 5 years are invited to participate. Space is limited. Preregistration suggested. Fee is $4 for members, $5 for non-members. Call 410-326-2042, ext. 41.

The museum is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $9.00 for adults, $7.00 for seniors and military with valid I.D., and $4.00 for children ages 5 - 12; children under 5 and museum members are always admitted free.
