Alaska Boating Education Coordinator Wins NASBLA "Boatsey" Award
Alaska Boating Education Coordinator Wins NASBLA "Boatsey" Award Joe McCullough, Education Coordinator with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Office of Boating Safety, was named the Boating Safety Educator of the Year at last week's annual National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) conference.

The award, known informally as "The Boatsey", was launched by NASBLA in 2011 and is sponsored by BOATERexam.com, the leading online boating safety course. Every year the award honors the outstanding contributions of professionals and volunteers who make boating education initiatives relevant and exciting to all boaters.

"We are very proud to honor Joe McCullough with this award," said Kerry Moher of Fresh Air Educators, the developers of BOATERexam.com. "In a state that doesn't have mandatory boater education, Joe's passionate commitment to getting safety information into as many boaters' hands as possible has no doubt saved lives."

Joe McCullough has gone above and beyond in his role as an education coordinator, not only traveling to remote parts of the state to teach boating safety to thousands of children, but also spearheading the training of hundreds of people who are in a position to train others, including instructors, teachers, state troopers and military personnel. McCullough has also written Alaska's education curricula and produced award-winning videos such as Cold Water Boating and Boating Alaska.

"One of the reasons Joe's contribution is so important is that his work has had a very strong ripple effect, positively impacting thousands of boaters through 'training the trainer' and media outreach," continued Moher.

The awarding of the Boatsey Award was just one of the highlights of a very well attended 2012 NASBLA annual conference, which was held in Mobile, Ala., September 8th-12th. Every year, Fresh Air Educators looks forward to the NASBLA conference as a great opportunity to forward discussions about the importance of boating safety education in reducing fatalities and accidents on the water.
