DENVER - Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission will travel to Gunnison this month for its regular monthly meeting to be held Wednesday, August 8 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday, Aug. 9 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Western State College's Aspinall-Wilson Center, 909 E. Escalante Dr.
The Parks and Wildlife Commission typically has a light calendar for the August meeting and they will use the available time for a commissioner orientation, setting the calendar for future meetings and talking with members of the Gunnison community about local issues. The Wednesday afternoon session will include standard business items such as approving previous meeting minutes, updates from Commissioners and agency staff, a legal report and time for presentations from the public. Thursday's all-day session will be a brainstorming session for the Commission to consider future meeting times and formats, and Commission goals and objectives.
This is only the second meeting for the newly-appointed Parks and Wildlife Commission. The new Commission was appointed by Governor Hickenlooper in July and fully integrates the merger of the Colorado State Parks Board and the Colorado Wildlife Commission that was approved by the legislature during the 2011 and 2012 sessions.
The only regulatory action item on the agenda is a decision on increasing hunting opportunity for scaup, a diving duck found in Colorado's Central and Pacific flyways. Increases in the numbers of scaup have led the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to allow for greater take of the species and Colorado hunting regulations are proposed for an adjustment in response to the change.
