SCI Teams With Salvation Army to Feed the Hungry
Tucson, Ariz. - For over a decade, The Salvation Army and the Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF) have hosted an annual Feed the Hungry Feast in Reno as part of the SCI annual Hunters' Convention. This year's event was the 11th annual dinner and it was held at the Reno Events Center in downtown Reno on the evening before the Convention opened.

Over the years the event has grown to become one of Reno's major events to help the homeless and those in need of a hot meal. Like many parts of the country, the tough economic times have created a need that sportsmen and hunters can fulfill. This year almost 2,000 meals of elk meatloaf, salad, mixed vegetables, mashed potatoes, bread and dessert were served to the hungry of Reno.

SCIF's Sportsmen Against HungerTM program contributes game meat to The Salvation Army, which helps to organize the event. Over 800 pounds of Roosevelt elk and beef were donated by the Northern Nevada Chapter of Safari Club International and by Multiple Use Managers - a wildlife management service that combines hunting and recreation across the United States.

"The economic difficulties being faced by families throughout the country have created a severe need for a healthful and safe source of protein. Our SCI/F hunting family is proud to step up to the plate to provide thousands of highly nutritious protein-packed meals by way of our continued donations of harvested game meat through our Sportsmen Against Hunger program," said SCI Foundation Humanitarian Services Chairman Gene Rurka.

More than 150 volunteers helped with the event, including the High Sierra Chefs Association, Wells Fargo, Kiwanis Sunrisers Club, Boy Scout Troop 152, Girl Scout Troop 72, McQueen High School football players, Job Corps students and members of The Salvation Army Advisory Board. In addition, more than 90 SCI members arrived early to work on the serving lines, including SCI' past president Merle Shepard.

Eldorado Hotel Executive Chef Troy Cannan and his staff donated their time to prepare the game and other food donations into a great meal. Other sponsors who contributed to the event included the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Association, C & M Food Distributing, Model Dairy, SportService, Truckee Sourdough Company, Harrah's Reno and SYSCO.

Safari Club International started the Sportsmen Against Hunger program in 1989 and since then tens of millions of meals have been served at local soup kitchens, food banks, or other charitable organizations. Donations continue to increase each year and during the 2008 hunting season, a record 418,242 pounds of meat was donated to the program.
