Kansas' Tolen Creek to Host 3-D Archery Competition
Parsons, Kansas - The Labette County Archery Club will be hosting a 3-D Archery shoot at the Tolen Creek Walking Trail on Sunday, September 6 from 8am to 2 pm. The walking trail is located just south of 400 Highway East of 16th Street behind the Stockyards Travel Plaza.

A 3-D archery shoot allows competitors to shoot arrows at 20 different life size 3-D targets in situations that are similar to real hunting. Targets simulate various animals including deer, coyotes, bears, elk, and even alligators.

Scoring is decided by how close the arrows are to specific rings that represent kill zones on the artificial targets. Different classes and shooting locations allow a range of different skill levels to compete in the event.

Many of the competitors are hunters and utilize the 3-D shooting sport to keep their skills honed when hunting season is not open. With the event being so close to the opening of deer season the club expects a large turnout as hunters prepare for the opening of the archery season in Southeast Kansas.

The cost of the shoot is $7.00 for members and $10.00 for non-members of the archery club. For more information on how to participate in the shoot contact Jacob Nance at 620.820.3807.

The shoot is supported in part by Labette County Tourism. "We hope this event will continue to grow as they bring the fall 3-D shoot back to Tolen Creek each year. This type of event is exactly the type that has the potential to grow and attract participants from outside the region," said Jim Zaleski, Director of Tourism for Labette County.

This represents the third major event being held at the Tolen Creek Walking trail. Other annually scheduled events include a kids fishing derby that recently attracted more than 35 children and their families to a day of fishing and fun. Another event is the Farm Heritage Celebration, which attracted as many as 1000 people last year and is scheduled to be held October 10, 2009.

Southeast Kansas is well known for its deer hunting and other outdoor activities. The city of Parsons was named one of the "Top Ten Whitetail Towns in the Country" by Outdoor Life Magazine.

Zaleski explained that the promotion of the regions outdoor activities such as hunting, camping and fishing are a critical part of the Tourism Department's marketing efforts. The tourism bureau attends as many as a dozen outdoor trade shows and events each year to promote the region's recreation al possibilities.
