Deciding Where to Go In Florida for Get Outdoors Day
There is no shortage of healthy, fun activities and places to enjoy them in Florida for National Get Outdoors Day this Saturday.
You can reel in a fish for supper, burn some calories walking along a trail on public land or do something for the environment, like create a wildlife refuge right in your backyard by planting native plants for food and shelter, or volunteer to clean up a park, shoreline or roadside.
The state has more than enough beaches for swimmers and dreamers, and enough space for kite-fliers and bicyclists, bird watchers, boaters and wildlife photographers.
"By heading outside and participating in any of the countless outdoor activities Florida's natural areas have to offer, Floridians are helping their families achieve, not only a better appreciation of nature, but a healthier lifestyle," said Bob Wattendorf, chairman of the Get Outdoors Florida! Coalition.
The hard part might be deciding where to go for this second annual Get Outdoors Day. No need to fret, though. It is an annual event. For that matter, any day, any weekend, is a good opportunity to see what adventures await beyond the front door.
Where to go?
Wattendorf, a marketing and special projects coordinator for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), said outing options are available on millions of acres of land and lakes and thousands of miles of waterways. For instance, the FWC has 5.8 million acres of wildlife management areas, where you can stretch your legs and learn more about the creatures and plants that live on the peninsula.
The state has 12,000 miles of fishable rivers, streams and canals. About 7,700 lakes greater than 10 acres in size offer thousands of opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing or skiing.
The FWC's Great Florida Birding Trail has almost 500 sites around the state selected for their excellent bird-watching opportunities.
Gov. Charlie Crist, who recently recognized June as National Great Outdoors Month, encourages residents and visitors to celebrate National Get Outdoors Day on Saturday.
