Les Baer’s Boss .45 In Mar/Apr American Handgunner

“The list of specific features the Boss offers reads like a wish list for any custom 1911 aficionado,” writes Publisher Roy Huntington of the American Handgunner March/April cover gun, the Les Baer Boss .45.

Inspired by Les Baer’s love of the Boss 429 Ford Mustang, Roy took the custom .45 ACP test gun for a spin, and it performed like its powerful namesake — living up to his expectations of the Les Baer team. The “nearly magical” Black Hills 230-gr. ball load delivered an average of 1.40-inch groups at 25 yards. “When I missed, it was my fault. Period,” he asserts.

With Rock Island Armory’s MAPP MS, a proven design lives on at a very affordable price. The 9mm is a familiar CZ clone with parts manufactured by none other than Tangfolio in Italy. David Freeman reveals the MAPP’s many attractive features, particularly for concealed carry. Among them, Dave believes “easy takedown and cleaning make the MAPP an excellent first pistol or personal defense pistol. Robust, well-proven components in this proven design inspire confidence.”

A resurrected version of the original issued in 1967, the Smith & Wesson Model 19 Classic leads this month’s Handgun Of The Month package. The timeless .357 Magnum has a bright blue finish, custom wood grips and an adjustable black rear sight paired with a red ramp front sight. Grayman Knives’ TIGA folder and a PLR Stiletto flashlight from SureFire round out the prizes valued at $1,410. Further points of interest in the Mar/Apr issue include a look at competition shooting. Can you afford to compete? Can you afford not to? Dave Anderson weighs the odds in the Winning Edge installment. You might discover close-encounter wheelguns offer a truly thrilling way to hunt with the tips Mark Hampton shares in the Handgun Hunting column. Ayoob Files features the tale of “Peachy” and “Greek” — a classic disparity-of-force case — with a surprise appearance by America’s most “honest” president. And available online only, this month’s Exclusive, “Turbocharging Your GLOCK,” Will Dabbs, MD, reviews the DSP Laser for pistol-frame texturing.
