Youth Winners of the 2018 CCA STAR Announced

The 2018 CCA Louisiana Statewide Tournament and Anglers’ Rodeo (STAR) announced its youth winners Thursday after a random drawing was held at the CCA Louisiana office in Baton Rouge.

Each year thousands of youth anglers enter the STAR Tournament. Youth members, 17 years and younger, are eligible for all of the divisions of STAR including the Tagged Redfish Division, but they are also eligible for the Youth Division sponsored by Academy Sports + Outdoors, Redmond’s Marine and Mercury Outboards.

Youth anglers register a trout or a flounder over 14 inches by bringing the fish to a STAR weigh station or by emailing a picture of their catch to the CCA Louisiana office. Once the tournament concludes, CCA places all of the youth names in a hopper and draws for four 14ft Weldbilt Aluminum Boat packages which include a 15hp Mercury Outboard and Mike Gerald’s McClain trailer. One winner from each regional division is chosen and is based upon where their fish is caught.

“CCA’s mission is to protect and preserve marine resources for the enjoyment of future generations,” said Rad Trascher, Director of Development and STAR Tournament Director, “So it’s great to see so many kids participate and truly get hooked on our favorite pastime.”

The winner of the East Youth Division is Marin Field, an 11-year-old from Baton Rouge. Marin caught her fish at one of the barrier islands in St. Bernard Parish while on a trip leaving from her family’s place in Pass Christian, MS. She wanted to take part in STAR and officially weigh in her 2 lb. trout so she and her dad made the trip over to Rigolets Bait and Seafood in Slidell.

The winner of the Southeast Youth Division is Ethan Frazier from Glenmora. Ethan, who is also 11 years old, caught his prize-winning fish in Grand Isle from the beach and registered it at Bridgeside Marina. Not only does it net him a boat, motor and trailer package, it was also the first speckled trout he ever caught.

The winner of the Southwest Youth Division is Foster Searcy of Lafayette. Foster caught his trout outside Vermilion Bay and weighed it in at Dago’s. Foster has been heartbroken all summer because the day before STAR started he caught a fish of a lifetime (pictured here) and wanted to win a NauticStar Bay Boat in the adult division but he will be happy with his new Weldbilt and Mercury Outboard package.

The West Youth Division winner is Cyrus Sloane, Jr. of Lafayette. The nine-year-old Cyrus caught his winning fish over the 4th of July holiday while fishing with his dad in Grand Chenier, making it a trip to remember. He entered his fish through the email system.

“Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to all the parents for getting your kids involved,” said Snoop Roth, CCA Louisiana STAR Chairman.
