CMP Eastern Games Matches Greets Over 400 Competitors

CAMP BUTNER, N.C. – Resuming its annual travel competition schedule, the Civilian Marksmanship Program made the journey to North Carolina to greet an enthusiastic audience of over 420 competitors at the 2021 Eastern CMP Games and Highpower Rifle Matches.

Held April 22 through May 2 and seeing more than 1,500 entries, the Eastern Games featured a full schedule of rifle and pistol events – some known to CMP supporters and others freshly added to the lineup.

Offering more educational options, CMP’s Pistol Marksmanship 101 Course and accompanying M9 EIC Match was held for the first time at Camp Butner. Similar to Rifle Marksmanship 101, participants in the Pistol Course were instructed in the classroom and on the range on firearm and competition fundamentals, including proper firing practices and safety guidelines.

Winning the M9 EIC Match was Rodney Brickell, 53, of Chesapeake, Virginia, with a score of 235-3x. For his win, Brickell will receive his first credit points towards a Pistol Distinguished Badge.

Other pistol additions to the schedule in 2021 were .22 Rimfire Pistol, Center Fire and .45 Pistol 900 Aggregates, along with the coinciding Pistol 2700 Aggregate competition. Setting precedents in the events were Any Sight competitor Christopher Roberts, 47, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Metallic Sight competitor Eric Herrin, 57, of Raleigh, North Carolina, who earned overall wins in their respective disciplines.

Brian Williams, 47, of Granby, Massachusetts, collected several top finishes in rifle matches throughout the week, such as Carbine, Garand, Springfield and Modern Military competition victories. His consistent performances led to earning both the Three Gun and Four Gun Aggregate titles.

Williams was only eight x’s from the current Four Gun Aggregate Eastern Games record score of 1152-35x – which he personally set in 2019. He also holds Eastern Games records in the Modern Military and Carbine events.

Marking a new Eastern Games high score in HP competition was Jack Jones, 74, of Akron, Ohio, who fired a 2320-72x to claim the overall service rifle grand senior honor.
