Quiet Fight Raging
It's not exactly insider information, but through dueling local news reports, we've learned that there's a quiet, but pitched, battle going between Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and Stillwater, Oklahoma.
The prize? the Mercury MerCruiser manufacturing facilities currently located in Fond du Lac. A story in the Stillwater NewsPress quotes Stillwater City Manager Dan Galloway that the city is "trying to do everything we can to encourage MerCruiser to relocate to Stillwater." Meanwhile, the Fond du Lac Reporter says their city officials have held closed door meetings regarding "an economic development issue". Those same officials have not publicly confirmed the Mercury facility as the economic development issue being discussed. Mercury Marine spokesman Steve Fleming, wisely, says the company does not comment on rumors. Should the Fond du Lac plant be relocated, it would reportedly double the number of Mercury jobs at Stillwater. Globally, the $2 billion division of Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC) employs more than 6,000 workers scattered among ten manufacturing locations from Fond du Lac (also the world HQ) to Stillwater in the United States, as well as China, Mexico, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. Products range from the MerCruiser sterndrives and inboards, Mercury and Mariner outboards, MotorGuide trolling motors, Mercury and Teignbridge propellers, Mercury inflatables, SmartCraft electronics to Mercury and Quicksilver parts and oils. The stakes are high enough that Wisconsin state officials are working on an incentive package to keep the plant while the Stillwater Chamber of Commerce is working the same package and hoping for polar opposite results. Oklahoma has already passed a bill that relieves Mercury of more than a million dollars in tax penalties. Those were retroactively due when the Stillwater plant fell below a specified number in investments or employees. Under Oklahoma Senate Bill 929, the penalty will only have to be paid if the company left the state. The battle for business is always pitched, but quietly. We'll keep you posted. -- Jim Shepherd
