Editor's Note On Thursday, the New Jersey Assembly's Judiciary Committee is scheduled to consider legislation observers say is a direct attack on sportsmen, collectors and target shooters. A2116 would ban the purchase, transfer and inheritance of many popular hunting guns, historical American firearms and large bore target firearms. The bill, while portrayed as a ban on .50 caliber and larger firarems, would ban dozens of models of popular hunting guns, including traditional .50 muzzle loaders with synthetic stocks, fiber optic sights or riflescopes in lieu of sights. The bill would also ban many modern safari and hunting rifles. A2116 also bans hundreds of historical American firearms and replicas, including from the Civil War and Revolutionary War eras, and wrongly demonizes the .50 BMG rifle, which is not and has never been used in a criminal activity. New Jersey residents are encouraged to contact the members of the NJ Assembly Judiciary Committee and encourage them to oppose A2116. Happenings worth noting around the outdoors...
...The Armed Forces Foundation is planning the second installment of "Project American Heroes". With Super Chevy Magazine's superior automotive knowledge guiding the process, the program will see a classic automobile designed, built, and then auctioned off. The proceeds of the vehicle will be donated entirely to the Armed Forces Foundation. Our roles in this program are simple- we need to pass the information along to any Service Members (active duty, National Guardsmen, reservists, Veterans, or families of the military) that might be interested in helping vote on the style and color scheme of the car they build. In 2007 a 1957 Chevrolet convertible was built and then auctioned off at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Palm Beach. It netted $130,000 to the Armed Forces Foundation. This year, another Chevrolet icon, a 1969 RS/SS Camaro. The build is currently in progress with performance parts supplied from over 25 companies and scheduled for its formal unveiling on August 9th at the Route 66 Super Chevy shows. There are five different choices for how this Camaro will look when completed. Former and active service members can vote on the style they like until June 15, 2008 at www.projectamericanheroes.net All of us can visit the web site after for build updates, news, or donation options. ...She's not known very well - yet - but don't be surprised if you hear the name Holly Bostick in the future. The wife of a lifelong hunter turned guide, Holly never thought much about hunting until she started to realize how many injustices were aimed at hunters. So, Bostick decided to do something to, as she put it "protect the legacy of hunting for my boys, aged 16 and 21, and my grandchildren." She formed a company that was got noticed at the 2008 Shot Show because of the shirts, jackets and caps that had the legend "Save The Hunter". My friend Richard Sanders told me about Bostick, saying he was intrigued enough by her company that he stopped in the booth. At that point, it seems Sanders became a fan of the company and the lady who started a company with the slogan "A Passion. A Legacy. A Way of Life". Bostick's goal is simple, she's using the "Save The Hunter" slogan on clothing as an ice breaker. When someone asks "What does that mean?" Bostick says that's a great opportunity to educate people who are ignorant about hunters and the many things they do to keep "the cardinals coming back to bird feeders, the deer grazing out their back doors, the fish swimming in their favorite lakes" and more for wildlife conservation. She says it's her "wake up call to the masses" because Save The Hunter's goal is to give us a non-threatening way to tell the story of hunters without a bias - and open a discussion with people who will probably listen and then ask questions. Questions, she says, we should all be prepared to answer from the standpoint of informed outdoorsmen and women, hunters, conservationists and citizens. Holly Bostick may not get right with Save The Hunter, but she certainly deserves an "attagirl" for the efforts. You can learn more about her cause at www.savethehunter.com . We'll keep you posted.
